Cape of Good Hope

Africa-342

We visited Cape Town over New Years Eve 2013/14 and as you would imagine, any city ringing in the new year is going to have a bit of a different flair than it normally would!

The city felt a bit overrun for my liking and I don’t believe we were able to get a good sense of what it is normally like.  My favorite part of our time there was driving the Cape of Good Hope.  It was a perfect day!  The road follows the rugged coastline and allows for plenty of spectacular sightseeing.

We hired a driver for the day, which was a great decision, giving us the freedom to hop out, take photos and explore different areas without worrying about parking or tickets.

My favorite part of the day (per usual) were the animals!  Baboons and ostriches on the beach?!  Who would have thought.

On the east side of the Cape Peninsula is Boulders Beach, which is home to a colony of over 2,000 African penguins….who hang out on the sand!

These well dressed little fellows waddle all over the beach and love to pose for photos!

If the tide is low, you are able to access the public beach, walk to where the crowds have dispersed and hang side by side with these funny birds.

However, some of the penguins are fine with the crowds and clearly enjoy a bit of the limelight…as you can see with this one, happily posing for a photo!

Africa-395Accommodations: The Westin Cape Town  We booked this hotel using Award Points through our credit card.  It has the feel of a convention hotel, so no charm at all, but the location works and you know what you are getting with a Westin!  Clean and comfortable…thankfully with a doctor on call, which we unfortunately needed one morning.

Leave early morning and do the drive around Cape of Good Hope.  Lunch at the sushi restaurant http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g1722390-d1929275-Reviews-Two_Oceans_Restaurant-Cape_Town_Western_Cape.html makes for a perfect break in the day.

Spend an afternoon here:
Cute shops and restaurants – lots of local artisan goods.  Spend a couple hours here and grab some food.
